Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the teeth located at the back of the mouth and are the last set of adult teeth to emerge. Most people have between one to four wisdom teeth, that begin to emerge between the ages of 18 to 25. Some wisdom teeth will fully emerge without any significant issues. While others may become stuck (or impacted) against the gums, teeth or bones.

Impacted wisdom teeth that remain in the mouth, may cause increasingly uncomfortable symptoms, including:

• Pain and discomfort in the mouth, jaw and face
• Tooth sensitivity
• Swelling and inflammation
• Decay to surrounding teeth

Where left remaining in the mouth, impacted wisdom teeth may cause decay, infection, damage to surrounding teeth, gum and bones and even development of painful cysts.

If you are experiencing symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth, your dentist may refer you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for assessment and removal of one or more of your wisdom teeth.

Some wisdom teeth can be removed under local anaesthetic (while you are awake). While others may be more difficult to remove and require removal under general anaesthetic in a day hospital setting.

At your initial consultation, Dr Oztel will take your detailed medical and dental history, conduct a comprehensive examination, review x-rays and may refer you to undergo further investigations to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.

If you do require surgical removal of your wisdom teeth, Dr Oztel will discuss the benefits and risks of surgery and answer any questions you may have.

Following surgery, is it normal to experience some pain, swelling and discomfort. These symptoms can by managed through rest, pain relief and applying cold compress. Depending on the complexity of your procedure, your symptoms may subside within a few days, or up to one week. A soft diet is required for short period post-surgery.
